Story of Varg

In Old Norse, 'Varg' translates to wolf—a name deeply tied to the mythical beast Fenrir. It’s a fitting title; her original builder envisioned the ultimate Arctic expedition vessel, designed to be a true explorer at sea. Varg’s story began in Arendal in 1996, though her builder sadly passed away before seeing her dream fully realized.

We chose to keep the name to honor that legacy (and because any seasoned sailor will tell you that renaming a ship invites bad luck!). We hope she would be proud to know her vision is now answering the call of the wild, launching adventures for travelers from all over the globe.

A Fortress Against Arctic Elements

After serving as a company showboat for years, Varg joined the Norrøna family in the spring of 2023. Even now, 30 years after her launch, she remains fiercely capable. Her 7mm-thick steel hull plates hold their perfect shape, supported by bulkheads every 40 cm. A massive 15cm steel rod reinforces the bow, connecting directly to a long keel that guards the propeller and rudder. With an added heated-glass windscreen, heavy-duty wipers, and an electric bimini, the cockpit stays incredibly well-protected no matter the weather.

Warm Sanctuary

While Varg is built to battle the harsh outdoors, her interior is a warm sanctuary. There are three dedicated zones where you can hang out, sheltered from the conditions, while still watching the wild outside: the large cockpit (complete with a gas grill), the generous pilothouse, and the onboard sauna, which features portholes and a skylight. For a truly unique and private experience, a wood-fired bathtub sits out on the deck, fitting two guests comfortably under the open sky.

Nordic Comfort & Sustainable Design

Guest comfort is prioritized after a long day of Arctic exploration. Dedicated drying facilities ensure you always have dry clothes and gear ready for the following day, while every cabin provides a private retreat with its own en-suite bathroom. During her recent refurbishment, we prioritized sustainability by reusing original materials and incorporating sustainable thermal ash and birch plywood throughout. Finished with classic Nordic design elements—including Louis Poulsen lamps and Vola fixtures—Varg perfectly balances rugged expedition capabilities with high-end comfort.
